Psychological Training in Assessment and Treatment of Persons with Serious Mental Illness

Psychology Training Programs

There are many training programs whose websites indicate an emphasis in SMI/SED, but not all indicate targeted training in the methods of psychosocial rehabilitation using the recovery paradigm as the foundation of training.

In August 2021, APA granted approval for post-doctoral training programs in SMI Psychology to apply for accreditation from APA in the SMI Psychology Specialty. Post-doctoral programs should review the Competencies and Training Guidlines document available on the Training Materials page. Programs should also consult the APA Commission on Accreditation's most recent Standards of Accreditation and the most recent Implementing Regulations for requirements and information and contact the APA Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation for guidance and assistance.

As of 2025, the following post-doctoral programs offered training in SMI Psychology. Program offerings are subject to change and anyone interested should check the institution's website for the latest information. Many of these programs were accredited in Clinical, Counseling, or another specialty prior to receipt of APA approval for accreditation in the SMI Psychology Specialty. All post-doctoral programs providing training in SMI Psychology are strongly encouraged to become accredited in the SMI Psychology Specialty.
